Hunting Tips: Scent Control

By HHA | May 2010

As you probably known, odor is very an important aspect to take care of when you are ready to begin your hunting season. Personal scent control could be main cause of your failure to catch your favorite prey. Some hunters underestimate the importance of human scent control, thinking it's just a kind of hype instead of a basic rule for hunting. The fact is that hunters should take care of their scent, using special soap for personal hygiene and unscented detergents to wash their hunting clothes. But before you wash your clothes you have to clean the washer tub from any remains of normal detergents. And remember you have to wash everything you are planning to wear in your hunting trip; if you leave some item out of this measure, all your effort will be pointless, so include your "lucky hat" in the washing step.

You also have to store your clothes in scent free containers, and if you already know the place where you are planning to hunt, look out for branches or leaves from local trees to put among your gear. Your gear will absorb some of these natural odors.

The most basic part of scent control is to wash your clothes in hunters’ detergents and to clean yourself with special soaps and shampoos. You must also stay away from fuels with strong aromas like gasoline or kerosene. You can take this strategy way further by taking into account the way you store all your hunting equipment (camping gear, arms, etc). You have to put all your equipment away from strong smells and human related odors, too. The ideal housing would be in a special shed, built just for hunting gear and away from your home or any other human facility.

Remember that after you wash your body with hunters' soap and shampoo you have to use towels prepared the same way the hunting gear was, and you then have to apply a hunters' deodorant to minimize problems with scents later that day.

If you are really concerned with scent control you have to make changers in your diet. Avoid strong smelling foods, like garlic, onions, and spicy food. Also, avoid foodstuff that your system can't process properly or is too strong for you; you know what I mean! Avoid strong drinks like coffee, tea or booze. They not only will increase your body odor, but also your needs for urination. Take care of your mouth breath as well, ether using special chewing gum designed for hunters or with chlorophyll tablets.
